mashable:

Marley Dias is frustrated with the lack of diversity in her reading curriculum. That’s why the 11-year-old started a campaign called #1000BlackGirlBooks, which collects and donates books in which black girls are the main characters.

“I was sick of reading about white boys and dogs,” Dias said. “And I told [my mom] I was going to start a book drive, and a specific book drive, where black girls are the main characters in the book and not background characters or minor characters.”

The goal is to collection 1,000 titles by February 11, 2016 when Marley and two fellow student organizers will travel to St. Mary, Jamaica to deliver the books and host a book fair. [via]

Idris Elba: Speech on diversity in the media and film

I’m here to talk about diversity. Diversity in the modern world is more than just skin colour. It’s gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, social background, and - most important of all, as far as I’m concerned – diversity of thought. Because if you have genuine diversity of thought among people making TV & film, then you won’t accidentally shut out any of the groups I just mentioned.

It is almost surreal to see Flint’s water crisis reaching Time Magazine. I definitely want to read this article. I haven’t bought a Time Magazine since I was in high school.

Zine

loona is a little book of words in progress, drawings, ideas. it has no fixed topics or themes, fluid, as most things are. quite uncertain as to where it may venture, from the moon to captain beefheart. it is the reincarnation of a previous zine, that was hand distributed, left in my favourite books in book shops, sent by post across the world. it begun, for no reason more than having a tangible thing you could hold in your hands and react to, in whatever way, something to treasure to or recycle, something real. to receive something through the post, a gift from across the world, from a person you don’t know, to have words or an object hopefully less quickly forgotten than the tabs or articles so easily abandoned on the internet. a collection of appreciated things, from me to you. it is currently left loitering around the city of berlin but can find it’s way to you, wherever you are.

the sound of sunday is a weekly sunday playlist, a collection of sonic treasures - for sundays are wonderful, but more especially making mixtapes for people is something i wish i could do for a living.

Every 28 Hours (7.10.15): Last night, a black Mississippi farmer was choked to death by a police officer. Jonathan Sanders was exercising his horses, when a white cop approached him, pulled him off his horse, and choked him with a flashlight. Literally no explanation has been provided as to why this unarmed man was stopped, let alone murdered. At the time of this post, at least five other people today alone have been killed by the police. #staywoke #farfromover

Ugandan Transgender Web Series ‘The Pearl Of Africa’ Debuts

Last week we reported on The Pearl of Africa, a groundbreaking documentary series focusing on Ugandan transgender rights activist Cleopatra Kambugu and her decision to transition openly despite rising anti-LGBTQI sentiment in the East African nation. The first installment of the seven-part series has surfaced online this week, offering viewers a firsthand look into the highs and lows of Cleo’s life over an 18 month period as captured by Swedish director Jonny von Wallström. The inaugural episode, which clocks in at just over five minutes, introduces us to Cleo and her boyfriend Nelson. The episode also details the changes that have occurred in Cleo’s life in the wake of her public outing in Ugandan tabloid Red Pepper and proposed anti-gay legislation from the Ugandan government. There are six more episodes planned for the series, which we’ll be posting as they’re made available each week. Stay tuned for our continuing coverage and watch first episode of The Pearl of Africa below.
